A Report On Interpreting Under Gile's Effort Model Based On The Global Autism Project

This report is based on the author's interpreting practice.The author was invited to Nanchang Huicong Child Rehabilitation Training Centre to interpret for the Global Autism Project.This report takes the autistic children behavior training and parents training as cases,analyzes the problems encountered by the author during the consecutive interpreting of the training course,and tries to explore the causes of the problems and the strategies to solve them from the perspective of Gile's Effort Model.The author used audio and video recording to record the contents of the interpreting,and then transcribed it afterwards.After the analysis,major failures were found out to be misinterpretation and loss of information.And these two problems were mainly caused by high information density,unfamiliar accent and the interference of presentations.Therefore,the author analyzed the strategies that could deal with this kind of problems from the perspective of Gile's Effort Model,including compression and paraphrasing.The main research methods used are recalling and case study.The shortcomings are summarized in the process of individual interpreting in the form of practice report,and the solutions are raised for the improvement of performance in the subsequent similar interpreting activities.To conclude,if an interpreter is not familiar with the speaker's accent,he has to put much effort in the listening and analysis process,and other follow-up links will lack of energy,which will affect the output If the interpreter can not get the presentation in advance,he needs to translate the presentation in the interpreting process,which may distract his energy,leading to interpreting failures.The application of compression can effectively solve information redundancy and high information density,and the application of paraphrasing can effectively lighten the load of presentations,by which the interpreter may interpret some terms in target language smoothly.
