Consecutive interpreting is a complex activity involving listening,comprehending,short-term memory,note-taking and production.During interpreting,an interpreter needs to effectively coordinate effort allocation in each phase for complete comprehension and fluent production. In practice,an interpreter may encounter imbalanced effort allocation, which may trigger interpreting problems. Therefore,it’s necessary to explore the causes of unbalanced effort allocation and seek coping strategies so that some guidance and reference to consecutive interpreting could be provided. The paper is based on an E-C consecutive interpreting task about a lecture on political science that was held by the Institute for China Rural Studies.Guided by Gile’s Comprehension Equation and Effort Model, the author attempts to explore the causes and coping strategies by analyzing problematic interpreting examples. The interpreting problems contain information loss, information inaccuracy, disfluency and information redundancy. They result from lack of professional knowledge and background information, deficient information processing, inadequacy in note-taking skills and inadequacy in short-term memory. The corresponding coping strategies include preparation for the lecture in various aspects, coordination between listening and note-taking,improvement in note-taking,coordination between note-taking and short-term memory in phase one,and omission, simplification and avoiding literal note-reading in phase two. They are proposed to reduce interpreting problems mentioned above, promote coordination of effort allocation and finally improve interpreting performance.
