A Study On Listening Comprehension In Consecutive Interpretation Frome English To Chinese

Listening comprehension is the first and important step when interpreting.It's especially so when it comes to consecutive interpretation because it affects note-taking and what the interpreter says.This thesis is based on the consecutive interpretation of a mock symposium interviewing Peter Thiel,an American venture capitalist,to study listening comprehension in consecutive interpretation,in order to shed some light on how to improve interpreter's listening comprehension skills and improve the interpretation quality.In the thesis,definitions of important concepts such as listening comprehension are given first,and then there is an analysis of the characteristics of listening comprehension in consecutive interpretation from English to Chinese.After that,problems identified in the interpretation during the mock interviewing are classified into three categories: first,ineffective identification of key words and incomplete main ideas;second,unclear logic;third,inadequate background information.Finally,strategies are provided based on the fact that the source language is English.These strategies include identifying key words based on words categories and their roles in a sentence,improving interpreter's logic analysis according to different text style and accumulation of related background information.Furthermore,a conclusion is drawn that the factors explored in the study,namely,key words,main ideas,logic and background information are dependent on each other when it comes to listening comprehension,therefore it is vital to improve interpreter's ability in gaining and processing information concerning these aspects in a comprehensive way.
