The source text of this translation practice is selected from the English book Water,Wastewater, and Stormwater Infrastructure Management, which mainly introduces some urban water conservancy infrastructures and their management methods.By these methods, people can better ensure the water safety, improve the urban ecological environment and promote the sustainable development of the city.Although there are many professional terms in the text, the language is relatively easy to understand,so the source text belongs to the popular informative text of English for science and technology(EST).Generally speaking,EST is used for objective statement of natural laws and phenomena and is characterized by being standard in language, strict in logic and professional in content, having its own unique features in terms of genre and language structure. In the translation of EST,on the one hand,it is necessary to accurately and effectively communicate the scientific and technological information in the original text;on the other hand, the translation should be better accepted by the readers.According to Nida's functional equivalence theory, the translator should take the reader's feeling into full consideration while trying to convey the source language inforamation as much as possible, making the translation consistent with the expression of the target language and the style of the source language. Therefore, the theory of functional equivalence is of great significance to guide this translation practice. The report consists of five parts:the first chapter is the introduction to the translation task, including the background and significance of the study as well as the language characteristics of the original text.In the second chapter, the author presents the process of translation, emphasizing the factors that the translator should consider in the translation preparation, the practice of translation and the post-translation.In the third chapter, the author reviews functional equivalence theory and discusses the application of it in the translation of EST at three levels:lexicon, syntax and discourse. In the fourth chapter, guided by the functional equivalence theory, the author analyses the specific translation methods of nominalized structure, passive sentences and long sentences in the source text. The fifth chapter is the summary of this translation practice, including the findings and suggestions in the translation. At present, there are few researches on English text translation related to water infrastructure in China. Therefore,it is hoped that the author can make a due contribution to the study of English translation in the water conservancy industry by this report.
