Chinese Translation Of Scientific And Technical Texts Under The Guidance Of Communicative Translation Theory

With the development of opening-up,scientific and technical exchanges at home and abroad gradually increase.There is an increasingly demand for Chinese translation of scientific and technical texts,especially patent texts.This is a real project to translate patent texts for Chinese Association of Automation which is a part of China Association for Science and Technology.This project boosts the communication of science and technology.By looking up and reading relevant books and journals,the writer summarizes the features of scientific and technical texts and development of their translation.These features include professional words,complicated sentences,various grammar structures and clear discourse characteristics.However,the situation of scientific and technical texts translation is not promising.It is not only because of the features of these texts,but because the translator do not have enough practices in this field.Peter Newmark has proposed semantic and communicative translation theories based on the classifications of language,which are expressive,informative and vocative language.And according to the features of patent texts,the translator chooses the Communicative Translation Theory to do the translation study.An American patent text is selected as the material of the translation practice report.The text is translated by using different translation methods under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory.And the translation cases analyses are done at lexical level,syntactical level and discourse level respectively.The report turns out that Communicative Translation Theory can not only guide the patent texts translation,but help domestic technical personnel,translators and other readers better understand the text.Meanwhile,the translator also hopes that this translation practice report can provide more guidance for Chinese translation of scientific and technical texts in the future.
