A Report On English Translation Practice Of Commentaries On The Three Gorges Dam Guided By Communicative Translation Theory

Technical texts focus on information transmission,which are logically structured and precise in expression,focusing on the transmission of information and the authenticity and accuracy of content.The Commentaries on the Three Gorges Dam mainly introduces the construction of the Three Gorges Project and the application of water conservancy and hydropower technology.It is a kind of technical text.The quality of translation directly affects tourists’ overall impression of the Three Gorges Dam and the understanding of the national water conservancy and hydropower technology.Therefore,more attention should be paid to the characteristics and differences between Chinese and English technical texts to accurately convey the content of materials.At the same time,the Commentaries on the Three Gorges Dam also performs the vocative function to attract visitors through the effective transmission of information.Therefore,the author should pay attention to the expression habits and acceptability of target readers during the translation process too.The article is a report on English translation practice.It takes the translation of the long sentences in the Commentaries on the Three Gorges Dam as an example to discuss the guiding role of the communicative translation theory to the translation of long sentences in technical texts.And on the basis of these analyses,the author summarizes the features of the Chinese and English technical texts and four corresponding translation methods of the long sentences about Chinese-English translation,namely natural order translation,inverted order translation,division and combination.Through this translation practice,the author finds that Newmark’s communicative translation theory centering on the target readers is helpful for the translation of technical texts because of its good guiding thought on fully conveying the source text information to the target readers.
