A Report On The Translation Of Scientific And Technical Texts By Translation Shifts Theory

China has become more and more cooperative with other countries in the world.The mutual investment between countries and the establishment of joint ventures shows a growing trend.With the rapid development of science and technology,the scientific and technical texts translation has become a hot topic in the modern society.The translation material of the report is Power Transformer Technical Specification,which is composed of two parts.The first part consists of 15 chapters,introduces the design requirements and test items of power transformers and its components in detail.The second part consists of 8 chapters,describes the painting and polishing requirements of transformer tank surfaces in system.The purpose of this translation text is to make the target readers,who are company designers,understand the technical requirements correctly and design the transformer productions meeting defined quality requirements strictly to achieve cooperation and bring economic benefits to both sides.The report is guided by the Translation Shifts Theory.It suggests that translation is not a simple correspondence between source texts and translation forms,but needs to express the original contents accurately by shifting.This theory is consistent with the features of scientific and technical texts,which focuses on contents.By taking the Technical Specification as the translation text and the Translation Shifts Theory as the theoretical guidance,this report describes the translation task and preparations firstly.Then,it summarizes the characteristics of vocabulary,sentence pattern and discourse of scientific and technical texts,and four different translation strategies,namely,class shifts,structural shifts,unit shifts and intra-system shifts.The author has got the following two inspirations: firstly,Translation Shifts Theory is highly effective and has a strong guiding significance for the scientific and technical texts.Secondly,the source text analysis is the foundation of translation.The correct understanding of background knowledge,main contents and main features of the source texts can greatly improve the translation efficiency.The author hopes that the analysis and summary can benefit the research on the translation of scientific and technical texts.
