Seen from the present situation of primary school English teaching in China,students' mastery of vocabulary has become a weak link of learning English.The new curriculum standard clearly puts forward that foreign language curriculum should pay attention to the quality education and comprehensive development of students.It emphasizes the learning process are encouraged to discover the rule of certain language through experience,practice,participation and cooperation,and to gradually master the way of using it.Teachers need to explore suitable teaching methods and carry out colorful activities in class to stimulate students' interest and arouse students' enthusiasm.Total Physical Response(TPR),proposed by James Asher,a professor of American psychology in the 1960 s,is such a way of teaching a foreign language.At present,most of our understanding of TPR is derived from theoretical research.There are few empirical researches on TPR teaching in primary school English teaching.This study tries to apply TPR teaching theory to actual practice,using the method to teach vocabulary in primary school.The study aims to put forward and answer three questions: First,can the use of TPR teaching method,stimulate students' interest in learning English vocabulary ? Second,can TPR teaching method students' achievement in learning English? Third,how to better use TPR in primary school English classroom teaching?The author of this thesis adopted the method of questionnaire and experiments,using them on two classes of experimental primary school in Huaiyin district of Huai'an city as the experimental subjects.The traditional English teaching method was adopted in the control class,and the TPR teaching method was adopted in the experimental class,and a16-week classroom teaching was carried out.It was found that compared with traditional teaching method,TPR teaching method has more advantages in the primary school English teaching,it can catch the attention of students,attract students to participating in the activities,so as to mobilize students' learning enthusiasm and cultivate the students' interest in learning.It is hoped that this study can provide some enlightenment to the choice of teaching methods in primary school English teachers.The thesis proposes that it is advisable for departments of education to strengthen the training of primary school English teachers,to encourage them to master TPR teaching methods and to improve their professional quality of teaching primary school English.It is also hoped that more teachers engaged in primary school English teaching can devote themselves to the study of TPR teaching method in primary school English classroom,so as to improve TPR teaching method as well as the effectiveness of primary school English classroom teaching.
