Vocabulary plays an important role among the three elements of language.English vocabulary is one of the contents what must be learned and mastered during the compulsory education stage.With the implementation and further deepening of the new curriculum reform,English vocabulary teaching plays a more and more important role.Aiming at the disadvantages of the existing vocabulary teaching methods,which are inefficient and monotonous,this paper focuses on the practice and application of the situational teaching method in the English vocabulary teaching.The situational teaching method concentrates on building and creating situations for students to learn knowledge.Students are guided to learn and internalize knowledge in the context,which makes knowledge acquisition more solid and easier to be converted into permanent memory.Vocabulary learning is relatively boring,while the primary school students are in the period of active image thinking.Carrying out situational teaching research in primary school English vocabulary teaching has great significance for improving learning quality.The main focus of this research is to resolve two problems: the first one is how to apply the situational teaching method to the English vocabulary teaching in primary school;the second one is how well does this method work.On the ground of relevant teaching method researches,combining with the characteristics of vocabulary teaching in primary schools,this paper summarizes the three principles and four steps of situational vocabulary teaching method.The types of vocabulary situational teaching are introduced from three aspects: the vocabulary presentation,vocabulary practice and vocabulary consolidation.In the process of the experiment,the three principles,four links and types of English vocabulary situational teaching in primary schools are integrated into the typical teaching cases.The main research method adopted in this paper is teaching experiment.The experimental subjects are two natural classes in grade 5 of M primary school in Houma city.The class 549 and class 550 are the experimental and control class,respectively.Before the experiment,a questionnaire survey of the English teachers from M,L,D and E primary school,as well as the students chosen as experimental subjects,is conducted to explore the current situation of vocabulary teaching and learning in the primary school.Then the subjects’ vocabulary level was evaluated before the experiment and the English situational teaching experiment during a semester is conducted.After the experiment,the subjects’ vocabulary level is measured and another questionnaire survey of the students is conducted to collect relevant data of the experiment for analysis.The software SPSS 19.0 is employed for data analysis and processing.Some conclusions can be obtained through the survey and the examination.The results show that the situational teaching method has a lot advantages in English vocabulary teaching in the stage of the primary school.It can improve the enthusiasm and participation of the students in vocabulary learning.It can also improve the test performance of the experimental class.The students of the experimental class can use the vocabulary more flexibly.These results demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the application method proposed in this paper.
