This is a critical commentary on the translation of some chapters from the book The Father I Had.The book,a biography by English writer and editor Martin Townsend, portrays a kind of extraordinary father-and-son love and the writer's feelings about his father's mental illness---bipolar depression(or manic depression)that had overshadowed most of his father's life. These translated chapters delineate not only the strong precious love between the writer and his father but also the typical symptoms of a manic-depressive.Guided by the semantic and communicative translation methods within the framework of Peter Newmark's translation theory,a distinguished English linguist and translator, the commentary has a discussion of the translation techniques adopted for this translation project. The commentary consists of two parts.Part One contains the original text and the translated text.Part Two is the critical commentary on the translation, including four sections.Section One introduces the background and significance of the translation project.Section Two presents the adopted translation theory and its translation methods.Section Three discusses the translation techniques of rendering difficult words and sentences in the original text in the light of Peter Newmark's theory.Section Four gives a review of the translator's academic gains during the translation process. The author hopes that through the translated text, readers can experience the special and unusual love between the father and his son, identify with those people suffering from manic depression, and further understand and respect those people with mental illness.
