The source text is selected from chapter one of Between the World and Me by American journalist and writer, Ta-Nehisi Coates. The year 2015 witnessed the victory of Between the World and Me in the National Book Award for Nonfiction whose Chinese version has not come into existence. Having taken its unique form of letter, eloquent narrative of rampant racism in America as well as tremendous attention to "the power of truth" in nonfiction literary works into consideration, the reporter believes this book is so typical that it is worth a translation research. Based on the text typology and local cultural factors in the source text, the translation practice carried out is expected to convey accurate information and the author’s expression of feelings to Chinese readers. Under the guidance of functionalist approaches, the report analyzes the utilization of translation techniques ranging from conversion, addition, extension to annotation with specific cases.The translation report consists of five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction, including a brief introduction to the translation project, author and his book Between the World and Me. Chapter two presents translation process involving pre-translation preparation, in-translation process and post-translation review.
