A Critical Commentary On The E-C Translation Of Chapters 6-8 Of White Ivy

This is a critical commentary on the English-Chinese translation whose original text is excerpted from the sixth chapter to the eighth chapter of the novel White Ivy by Susie Yang,a Chinese American woman writer.This book tells of the heroine Ivy’s growing-up experiences and love story after she immigrates to America.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory by Eugene Nida,the critical commentary explores the difficulties the translator faces in the process of translation,and presents the translation techniques the translator adopts to overcome these obstacles.The commentary consists of four sections.An introduction to the project is made in Section One,and the functional equivalence theory employed in the project is explained in Section Two.Guided by this theory,the translator attempts to produce an idiomatic translated version,thus improving the readability of the translated version.In Section Three,the translation techniques and the related case studies are expounded.At lexical level,the techniques of addition,omission,conversion of parts of speech and Chinese four-character set phrases are used.At syntactic level,following the original syntactic order,reinventing sentence structures,division,combination,and conversion of voice are employed while the translation of graphology and rhetorical devices are discussed at stylistic level.Different techniques are adopted at these three levels,which helps the translator to overcome difficulties in the process of translation.Section Four offers a brief summary of the project.Through this translation project,the translator hopes to improve her translation ability,and provide the translation experience to other translators as a reference.Meanwhile,the translator also hopes to transfer the author’s critical attitude towards the heroine’s social climbing by dint of marriage,thus arousing readers’ awareness of women’s independence.
