ObjectiveThis study systematically sorts out the historical materials of gynecology, traditional Western medicine of department of gynaecology, women’s education and social history before the founding of New China in 1840-1949,including relevant newspapers, books, archives, etc. On the basis of the classification of those historical materials, this study summarizes experience and lessons, and tries to take history as a mirror and provide reference for the modern development of gynecology in traditional Chinese medicine.MethodBy using the methods of medical history, documentation, comparative analysis and sociology to analyze and excavate relevant historical data.FindingsIn modern times, there was a turbulent period of intense social conflicts and internal and external diplomatic difficulties. In this special historical period, the development of obstetrics and gynecology in traditional Chinese medicine has been strongly impacted and challenged by Western medicine. With the increase of foreign exchanges, western medicine,as a product of colonial aggression, developed from foreign missionaries in Europe and America to top social intellectuals and politicians and ordinary Chinese who had received western medicine treatment. The proposal of "Protecting race by a powerful country" makes medicine not only a "private matter" related to personal health, but also a "public undertaking" shouldering the survival of the country.Since ancient times, women have shouldered the responsibility of racial reproduction.Their personal accomplishment and physical health are directly related to the overall quality of the whole nation. In order to save the whole Chinese nation from weakness and backwardness, women’s social role is valued by all walks of life.the women who were called "mother of state" in modern times undertook the important mission of "strong race".With the promotion and encouragement from all walks of life, women’s education has made rapid progress.Women’s vocational education has also developed vigorously. In order to improve the national quality and to instill universal medical knowledge into women, the promotion of healthy reproductive mode has become an important form of improving women’s health level. With the improvement of women’s status, the growth of women’s self-hygiene and health knowledge, and the opening of women’s medical concept, the medical market for women has also changed.Traditional Chinese gynecology has been impacted by the Western medicine of department of gynaecology, but with the participation of a group of female medical service providers with systematic education background,it is still very popular in the medical market.Traditional gynecological schools can be inherited and developed, and the clinical experience accumulated from generation to generation is reliable in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. In the collision with Western medicine, traditional gynecological theory has been enriched and developed, and the knowledge of diseases has been deepened. However,it can not be denied that the traditional feudal ideology has seriously hindered the development of Obstetrics and obstetrics in TCM.Feudal ethical concepts such as "prevention of men from women" and "preference of men over women" have isolated male doctors with good medical education from the delivery room;women who are directly engaged in childbirth can only rely on "oral-oral" experience for difficult labor and other operations because of lack of standardized medical education.Compared with the modern western delivery method, the high mortality rate of maternal and infant is astonishing.Influenced by increasingly exposed malpractices, obstetric delivery mode of traditional Chinese medicine has been eliminated. The concept of sterile sterilization during childbirth has been valued and has been put into practice by modified midwives.ConclusionThis study confirms that as an applied science and technology, the development of medicine will inevitably be deeply influenced by social development and has distinct sociality. The demand of society is the fundamental motive force for its development. Therefore, the research on the development of gynecology in TCM should not be confined to medicine itself, but should be put into the environment of social development. In the process of modern society, the change of social background, the improvement of women’s status, the development of medical education for women, and the rise and promotion of western gynecology in China have exerted many influences on the development of traditional gynecology.Gynecology of traditional Chinese medicine has achieved development, showing the tenacious vitality of traditional medicine.
