Objective: To investigate the prevalence and potential risk factors of osteoporosis(OP)in the middle-aged and elderly population in China. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study based on Dongfeng-Tongji cohort, which included 30916 individuals in the first follow-up from April to October in 2013.Quantitative ultrasound system was used to measure bone mineral density(BMD)of the anklebone.Semi-structured questionnaires, physical and biochemical examinations were completed at the same time.Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the potential risk factors for osteoporosis. Results: Prevalence of osteoporosis in all participants, male and female subgroup was 42.3%,35.0% and 48.3%,respectively.In <65,65-70,70-75,75-80 and ? 80 years old subgroup, prevalence of osteoporosis was 37.7%,41.7%,51.4%,52.4% and 54.6%,respectively.Older age, lower BMI,lack of exercise, abnormal elevated serum ALP,abnormal elevated serum ?-GT and abnormal elevated serum AST/ALT were risk factors for osteoporosis either in male or female group. In males,we also found significant associations of smoking and drinking with increased risk of osteoporosis. In females,we also found a significant association of menopause with increased risk of osteoporosis.Participants with the highest quartile of ALP,?-GT and AST/ALT had highest risks for osteoporosis [OR=1.687(95% CI: 1.538-1.851),OR=1.136(95% CI: 1.037-1.245),OR=1.347(95% CI: 1.223-1.482),respectively].Furthermore,the risk of osteoporosis was significantly associated with abnormal elevated serum levels of ALP,?-GT and AST/ALT in dose-response relationships, both in male and female group(all P for trend < 0.05).Conclusions: The prevalence of osteoporosis increased with age in the middle-aged and elderly population. The occurrence of osteoporosis was related with many factors. In addition to the traditional risk factors(such as age, gender and smoking),abnormal elevated serum ALP,?-GT and AST/ALT were also the risk factors for osteoporosis.Considering these risk factors, taking appropriate measures would contribute to prevent the occurrence of osteoporosis.
