Depression is the second most common disabling disease in the world. As a chronic disease, the treatment and prevention of depression are faced with many problems and difficulties.Self-Determination Theory(SDT)is a motivation theory that has been proposed for several decades years, which defines three basic psychological needs of humans: autonomy, competence, and relationship. These three basic psychological needs is the basis for individualsmental health. This study examined the relationshipbetweenthe satisfaction of three basic psychological needsand depression as well as the effectiveness of aSDT-basedintervention programon the remission of depressive symptoms. In study 1,basic psychological needs was assessed by Basic Psychological Needs Scales(BPNS);depression was assessed by Beck's Depression Inventory(BDI),and we examined family function with Family Assessment Device(FAD).We investigatedthree basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relationship of SDT,and their relationship with depression.Data from1,236 subjects were analyzed, showeda significant negative correlation betweenscores of BPNS and BDI,with a correlation coefficient of-0.19~0.38.Result of correlation analysis showed that the three factors of basic psychological needs could all satisfy multiple regression equations. In multiple regression equation, autonomy, competence, and relationship were treated as three independent variables and depression was the dependent variable.regression analysis results showed that multiple regression correlation coefficient as 0.409,decisive coefficient as 0.165,and adjusted decisive coefficient as 0.165.All three factors had a reliable negative predictive effect on depression(F=62.27)with the prediction coefficients ranged from-0.10 to-0.31.Family function has a significant association with depression, and in which the three basic psychological needs were mediatorvariables. On this basis,aSDT-Based psychological intervention of depression was established in research 2.4 participants who met the diagnostic criteria of DSM-IV depression were recruited. They all adopt to the personalized SDT-Based psychological intervention. After a one-month intervention, basic psychological needs of participants hadsignificantly increased, meanwhilethe depression level was significantlydecreased. As a conclusion, autonomy, competence, and relationship needs can be effectively used as predictors of depression, and they can also be used as mediator variables of family function in predicting depression.Intervention methods based on SDT can effectively reduce the level of depression of the patients.
