Depression, a mood that each individual may have in their course of life, is one of the most common psychological disorders in human beings. Subthreshold depression (SD) is a form of depression that does not meet the diagnostic criteria for depression. SD, a sub-healthy state between health and depression, includes depressed state in normal range and mild depression caused by systemic diseases. For patients with SD, their symptoms do not meet the diagnostic criteria for depression, but they are likely to worsen to the extent of depression if not intervened promptly.Group psychological intervention (GPI) is very effective for depressed state among non-medicine treatments. GPI combined with syndrome differentiation in TCM to treat patients with SD is a new field of study. In view of yang deficiency due to yin excess, one of the common symptom among patients with SD, the study combines the concepts of waxing and waning of yin and yang and supporting yang to inhibit yin in TCM with the advantages of TCM psychological treatment and modern GPI, proposes GPI by TCM and establishes the intervention for patients with SD. The study selected a certain amount of subjects and divided them into intervention group and control group. Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and Hamihon Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17) were used for screening and evaluation. The study has established a new intervention for patients with SD, namely, GPI by TCM, and evaluated its efficacy. It is significant for treating depressed state by syndrome differentiation in TCM, domestication of psychotherapy and GPI by TCM.Objective:To establish a new intervention for patients with SD, namely, GPI by TCM, from the perspective of yin-yang syndrome differentiation and evaluate its efficacy by random sampling. Methods:Firstly, it was proved by yin-yang syndrome differentiation that the symptoms of patients with SD are yin in nature, so the treatment should adopt the concepts of waxing and waning of yin and yang and supporting yang to inhibit yin in TCM. Then, the study reviewed TCM psychological treatments and the methods and techniques of GPI in western medicine, and established a new intervention for patients with SD, namely, GPI by TCM after consulting experts. Based on cluster random sampling,517 subjects were tested by Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and Hamihon Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17). After the screening,239 subjects were included into the study. Then,72 subjects were chosen randomly and divided into two groups: intervention group and control group. Before the intervention, the subjects were tested by CES-D. After the intervention (8 weeks later), the subjected were tested by CES-D again. All the data were analyzed by T-test and Rank sum test. Results: There were significant statistical differences between the total scores of the intervention group before and after the intervention, and between the total scores of the intervention group and control group after the intervention. Conclusions:GPI by TCM, which is based on supporting yang to inhibit yin, has desirable effects on alleviating the negative mood of patients with SD.
