ObjectiveThis paper explores training the practical skills of students majoring in geriatric nursing in higher vocational colleges through production-learning-research cooperation,and cultivate students' professional ability of geriatric nursing knowledge and skills,using knowledge,innovative thinking,and humanistic caring.We further verify its efficacy based on the evaluation of nursing students,and staff member and elderly people in pension institution.This provides theoretical and practical support for the application of production-learning-research cooperation,and lies a foundation for cultivating higher vocational nursing students with practical skills and creativity to meet the needs of aging society.MethodsThis paper is a quasi-experimental study.We select two classes of the 2015-grade sophomore geriatric nursing students(three-year schooling)in a higher vocational college in Chengdu,and divide into two groups--test group(37 people)and control group(35 people).Preparation stage(in third semester): Both groups have completed the specialized-base courses and clinical novitiate,and have enhanced understanding of geriatric nursing through second classroom.Implementation stage(in forth semester): Without changing the teaching plan,the control group adopted traditional “three-part” program,namely teaching in the school,experiment operation in the school,and clinic novitiate,while the test group adopted “production-learning-research” program,which includes concentrated teaching in school,and then alternating between class learning and practice,and task-driven innovative explorations in pension institution.Both groups have the same learning contents,material,teachers,practice place,and evaluation regardless of teaching sujiecet,organization,and methods.In the end,this study uses the Facts on Aging Quiz 1(FAQ1),Geriatric Nursing Course Grades,Skill Examination of Health Guidance on Elderly Hypertensive Patients,Self-Rating Scale for Self-Directedness in Learning(SRSSDL),Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory(CTDI),and Humanistic Caring Ability of Nursing Undergraduates Assessment Scale(HCANU)to evaluate the professional knowledge and practical skills of geriatric nursing,and conduct Self-made Questionnaire to investigate the satisfaction of staff member and elderly people in pension institution.ResultsA total of 69 nursing students completed all data collection,with the test group 36 students(1 students rejected),and the control group 33 students(2 students rejected).1.Professional knowledge scores: After intervention,the total scores of FAQ1 and Geriatric Nursing Course in test group are higher than those in control group(P<0.05),and the total score of FAQ1 in test group is higher than that before(P<0.05).2.Skill examination scores: After intervention,the total score of skill examination and 2 dimension scores of health assessment and health education in test group are higher than those in control group(P<0.05).3.SRSSDL scores: After intervention,the total score of SRSSDL and 3 dimension scores of learning strategies,learning activities and interpersonal skills in test group are higher than those in control group(P<0.05),and the total score of SRSSDL and 4 dimension scores of learning awareness,learning strategies,learning activities and interpersonal skills in test group are higher than those before(P<0.05).4.CTDI scores: After intervention,the total score of CTDI and 4 dimension scores of seeking truth,opening horizon,analysis ability,and CT self-confidence in test group are higher than those in control group(P<0.05),and the total score of CTDI and 5 dimension scores of seeking truth,opening horizon,analysis ability,CT self-confidence,and cognitive maturity in test group are higher than those before(P<0.05).5.HCANU scores: After intervention,the total score of HCANU and 6 dimension scores of instillation faith and hope,health education,solving health problems scientifically,assisting to meet basic needs,promoting emotional communication,and helping overcome difficulties in test group are higher than those in control group(P<0.05),the total score of HCANU and 7 dimension scores of instillation faith and hope,health education,solving health problems scientifically,assisting to meet basic needs,providing good surroundings,promoting emotional communication,and helping overcome difficulties in test group are higher than those before(P<0.05),and 2 dimension scores of instillation faith and hope,and providing good surroundings in control group are higher than those before(P<0.05).6.Staff member satisfaction: 89.7% of staff member are satisfied with the schoolenterprise cooperation,93.1% of them are willing to participate such cooperation,82.8% of them appraised the professional ability of nursing students,and 86.2% of them are willing to recruit these students after graduation.As for future cooperation,there are four options respectively,namely promoting nursing quality(96.6%),staff training(90.0%),building practice platform(79.3%),and technology conversion(72.4%).7.Elderly people satisfaction: 90.5% of elderly people are satisfied with the study,95.2% of them are willing to participate such study,over 80.0% of them show a positive attitude towards daily-life care,health assessment,fall-down protection,safety management,and humanistic caring provided by nursing students,and over 90.0% of them value the health education and TCM nursing.ConclusionsThrough the close cooperation of school and enterprise,the study shows that production-learning-research cooperation can not only cultivate the professional ability of geriatric nursing knowledge and skill,using knowledge,innovative thinking and humanistic caring of higher vocational nursing students,but also meet the needs of pension institution for talents,technology and nursing.What's more,the active participation of school and enterprise,building practice platform,and profession level of teaching team can guarantee the application of production-learning-research cooperation.
