Tong You Tang(TYT)was first recorded in“Spleen and Stomach Theory”writen by Li Dongyuan. It was used to treat obstructed pylorus, close epiglottis rushing, choking, and difficult defecation, and so on.Currently,TYT is mostly used for sorts of constipation and has significant clinical efficacy. Therefore,it is expected to be developed into an effective drug based on the classical formulas. However, the compatibility dosage, herb varieties and functions and indications of TYT from Jinyuan period show a certain differences with modern. The solution to these problems is the basis for the development of classical formulas. Objective:To verify the herbal composition, varieties, dosage, functions and indications, and clinical application of TYT,and to lay a foundation for the development of TYT for the treatment of elderly constipation. Methods:Using philological research methods to systematically review the records of classic writings and the evolution of the time, combined with the results of modern research, summarize and analyze the clinical application data of safety and effectiveness of TYT,and extract the prescription composition, drug dose, and functions and Indications to clarify its clinical application value. Conclusion:This article studies the composition and function of TYT from two aspects, which is the verification of medicines and the history and clinical application of TYT,respectively.1.The constitute and drug varieties of TYT were determined1.1 The Persucae Semen(PS)is derived from the seeds of various plants of the genus Amygdalus L.,but the seeds of non-grafted peaches Prunus persica(L.)Batsch and Prunus davidiana(Carr.)Franch.are preferred.Carthami Flos(CF)is a dry flower of Carthamus tinctorius L.Rehmannia glutinosa is a dry root tuber of Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch.Radix Angelica Sinensis(RAS)is the dry root of Angelica sinensis(Oliv.)Diels.Glycyrrhiza should be the dry root and rhizome of the genus Glycyrrhiza.Rhizoma Cimicifugae(RC)comes from the plants of genus Cimicifuga L.,are mainly dry rhizomas of Cimicifuga heracleifolia Kom.,Cimicifuga dahurica(Turcz.)Maxim.and Cimicifuga foetida L..They are all consistent with current medical conditions.1.2 The research on the processing methods of Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata(RRP)and Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata(RGP)was completed. The steamed method of RRP was comfirmed.Take Radix Rehmanniae(RR),follow the steamed method(general rule of Chinese medicine 0213)until it turned black and smooth, removed, and dried until the mucus was slightly dry, then cut thick pieces or pieces, dry. And the processing methods of RGP should be a simple method of fire preparing, that is,direct baking with fire.2.The dosage, solvent dosage, modern pharmacology and chemical composition of TYT were clarified1.1 Verify the drug dose of TYT prescription:PS 10g,CF 10g,RR 50g,RRP 50g,RAS 4g,RGP 4g,RC 4g.1.2 The Boiling solvent dosage of TYT that "water two lamp" is about 1400ml,and "boiled to a lamp" is 350ml.1.3 Modern pharmacological research indicated that PS has functions of cardiovascular protection, neuroprotection, immune regulation,anti-tumor,promotion of melanin synthesis, protection of respiratory system, protection of liver and kidney;CF can affect the cardiovascular system, central nervous system, excitement of uterine smooth muscle cells, enhance cellular immunity and humoral immunity,anti-inflammatory and other effects;RR has a certain effect on immunity, blood, endocrine, cardiovascular and nervous system, etc.RRP has a wide range of biological activities in hematopoietic system, endocrine system,immunity,anti-tumor and cardiovascular system;RAS has a protective effect on vascular endothelium,anti-aging,enhance immunity, analgesia, anticonvulsant and other effects;RGP has antitussive and antiasthmatic,anti-arrhythmia,anti-inflammatory,analgesic,regulate immune, affect the ileal activity;RC has inhibitory nucleosides operation, antiviral microorganisms,anti-tumor,neuroendocrine regulation,anti-osteoporosis,anti-inflammatory,hypoglycemic and other physiological activities.1.4 The main components of PS are fatty oils, glycosides, proteins, amino acids, volatile oils, steroids and their glycosides;CF mainly contains flavonoids, alkaloids, polyacetylenes, spermidine, lignans, sesquiterpenoids, organic acids, sterols and alkyl diols;RR mainly contains glycosides, sugars and amino acids, volatile oils, sterols and inorganic elements;RRP has glycosides, sugars, amino acids, inorganic ions and trace elements;RAS contains principally polysaccharides, organic acids, volatile oils, amino acids, etc.;RGP mainly contains flavonoids, triterpenoids, alkaloids, coumarins and sugars;RC mainly contains triterpenes and their glycosides(cephemol),phenolic acids and their derivatives(ferulic acid, isoferulic acid, caffeic acid),chromogens, volatile oils, and other compounds(ricinamide,isophthalamide).3.The function and clinical application of TYT are clarified1.1 TYT is used to treat for diet damages the stomach, fatigue and hurt the spleen to result in blood stasis and heat stay in body, obstructed in the esophagus, body fluid withered.Stomachache occurs at the blood stasis stay in body at long time to make fever and lack fluid to the esophagus cannot be nourished. The food in the stomach can't be given, but it can be overthrown, even if the water is hard to discharge,or it can vomit things like red bean juice.Because the longer illness to more wounded Yin blood, the intestinal tract is dehydrated, and the stool is firm. After a long period of lack of qi and blood to result in body thinness, dry skin, red tongue, lack fluid, and pulse fine tart.1.2 TYT is mainly used in clinical diseases of the digestive system, including pyloric obstruction, esophageal cancer, chronic atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer, various types of constipation, advanced prostate cancer, oral lichen planus, cerebral infarction, unstable angina and other diseases.
