Urbanization is an integral part of economic development.Rapid economic growth in Mauritius has led to the deterioration of the environment and congestion. In order to mitigate this situation a sustainable strategy is required to so sustain the economic growth of the island and alleviate the problems that have been created due to the growth.Transit oriented development which is an approach that integrates both the land use and transport planning is one such strategy.Transit oriented development is defined as a high density, mixed use type of development which promotes public transit services. The towns in Mauritius have some high density and mixed use type of development. In this context,TOD might already be a reality in some forms but need to be enhanced. Thus the current study has taken the town of Beau Bassin-Rose Hill(BB-RH)as a case study to investigate to what extent the town meets the TOD principles. The research comprises the analysis of the study area based on six TOD principles through a combination of Qualitative and Quantitative data by using the Case Study Method. The study also comprises a review of the innovative ideas to adopt in TOD through case studies in different cities across the world, analysis of the planning policies in the island and a contextual analysis of the town of BB-RH.The result of the study revealed the six principles for a proper TOD were not fully respected and suggested that some part of the area be redesigned using TOD principle to properly integrate the two systems(viz.land use and transportation)effectively.Furthermore, the findings based on the analysis of the urban policies revealed that there is some plans(viz.Action Area Plan)that can be developed to introduce the TOD strategies in the Urban Planning Framework.
