This paper studies inbound logistics system of automotive manufacturers.System analysis and mathematical optimization methods are used to analysis the system and improve its operations.Based on the investigation on the inbound logistics of automotive industry and third-party logistics providers(3PL)in China,we first describe and analyze the inbound logistics operation system that is currently used by most major manufacturers.The system usually involves vender managed inventory(VMI)and directly distribution(DD)transportation network.We recognize the key factors of the system and build a logistics cost analysis model for automotive inbound logistics.In order to improve the efficiency of current inbound logistics operations,we design a new inbound logistics operation system based on milk-run and take advantage of 3PL.A truck scheduling problem is proposed based on the operation of this new system and is formulated as a mixed integer programing model.The objective of the model is to minimize the total transportation cost of the milk-run routes scheduled for the trucks used for inbound logistics,subject to a number of constraints according to practical operations.A heuristic algorithm based on saving method and greedy method is developed to solve the problem.We present a case study based on the real inbound logistics operations of Y automotive manufacturer.The results show that our proposed cost analysis model and logistics operation system based on milk-run can be used effectively in practice,outperforming the traditional methods a lot,and our heuristic algorithm can solve the truck scheduling problem efficiently.
