As a node of the global integrated transport network, ports have more diversified functions and more extensive services, and have become the center of convergence of commodity flow, capital flow, technology flow, information flow and talent flow, which puts forward higher requirements for the positioning of ports in the supply chain. At the same time, the growth of ports is also the result of the integration of multi-index factors. How to give full play to the advantages of various aspects, maximize the development potential of each port, and play a vital role in the development and positioning of the port.Based on the comprehensive evaluation of the development potential of coastal ports, this study proposes a classification method for coastal ports based on comprehensive development potential,in order to locate and improve the development systems of different types of coastal ports by correctly locating different types of coastal ports, and correctly understand the coastal ports. The development trend, deep analysis of the development characteristics of coastal ports, and promote the sustainable and healthy development of coastal ports.Firstly, the comprehensive development potential of coastal ports is decomposed into four sub-project potentials: the sustainable development potential of coastal ports, the carrying capacity of coastal ports, the open potential of coastal ports and the potential growth potential of coastal ports.Applying factor analysis to measure the sustainable development potential of coastal ports;Applying the scale of the first city in the hinterland to characterize the carrying capacity of the coastal hinterland;Applying the dependence of foreign trade in port cities to characterize the opening potential of coastal ports;Applying the relative concentration coefficient of the port city to characterize the intrinsic growth potential of coastal ports.Secondly, the fuzzy membership function method is used to standardize the four subpotential indicators. The CRITIC method is used to determine the weight of each sub-item potential index, and then the linear weighted comprehensive evaluation model is used to measure the comprehensive development potential of coastal ports. On this basis, the Canopy+k-means algorithm is used to classify the coastal ports considering the characteristics of comprehensive development potential, and the development rules of various types of coastal ports are summarized. Finally, based on the classification method proposed in this paper,a comprehensive review and empirical analysis of the development status of 24 major coastal ports in China are carried out.According to the calculation results, the main ports in China's coastal areas can be classified into three categories: strong potential, medium potential and weak potential. The inductive features are as follows: Most of the major coastal ports in China are in medium-potential locations, and the distribution of major coastal ports is consistent with the distribution of China's economy and port development; The development of strong potential coastal major ports needs to strengthen the growth potential of the port;the strong potential coastal ports do not occupy and monopolize the port cargo market, but the container agglomeration effect is more significant. The classification method of coastal ports based on the characteristics of comprehensive development potential proposed in this paper can well locate the potential types of coastal ports and provide a new theoretical basis for correctly understanding the development trend of ports.
