Abstract/Summary:
Ports stand at the froneline as windows of China’s opening to the outside world. They are vital nodes of the comprehensive transportation system and important hinges of international economics and trade. With the continuous development and transformation of China’s economy, the quantity and scale of the ports have been greatly expanded.Meanwhile, ports have played an increasing role in China’s opening to the outside world and economic development since "the Belt and Road Initiative" was issued.Fujian Province, which locates at the southeast coast of China, was positioned as "the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road".As one of the three major 100-million-ton coastal ports in Fujian,Meizhou Bay port has developed rapidly in recent years, accounting for 40%of the whole provincial investment in port&waterway constraction in 2005 as an example. Thanks to "the Belt and Road Initiative",Meizhou Bay port has got a golden opportunity for its advantages of excellent position and long history. However, compared with Ningbo-Zhoushan Port,Fuzhou Port,Xiamen Port and other neighboring ports, there is still a certain gap of Meizhou Bay port in the overall size and development quality. Also, there are some outstanding problems with it such as non-obvious scale benefit and low logistics developing level. For this reason,it is a main content for the development strategy of Meizhou Bay port and also one of the important subjects of "the Belt and Road Initiative" to research on the development, competition and cooperation of Meizhou Bay port, identify the main factors which affected the competitiveness of this port, and put forward specific measures to enhance its comprehensive competitiveness. This paper began with a research on the agent, manifestation and features of the competition among ports, then gave a scientific definition to the comprehensive competitive power of a port and summarized the experiences through which some famous ports at home and board improved their competitiveness. In the second place,it fully analyzed the development status and development environment of Meizhou Bay port under the background of "the Belt and Road Initiative",and grasped the development direction and characteristics of the port.Thirdly,it established an evaluation index system of the comprehensive competitiveness for Meizhou Bay port which based on the existing theory and combined with the actual situation of the ports. Finally,it made a horizontal comparison analysis between Meizhou Bay port and its competitors by applying Factor Analysis method and Benchmarking Analysis method.According to the evaluation,it analyzed the competitive advantages and disadvantages, and then proposed corresponding countermeasures and suggestions to enhance the comprehensive competitiveness of Meizhou Bay port.Through the analysis, the following conclusions can be drawn:Since the present world slid into the weak recovery economic cycle, the economy and shipping industry in China have entered into the "new normal" state. With the release of policies such as "the Belt and Road Initiative" and so on,Meizhou Bay port faces both challenges and opportunities in its development. As the growth of the economy has slowed down and the economic structure is being deeply adjusted, the competition between Meizhou Bay port and its surrounding ports is mainly focusing on the hinterland cargo, transfer service, investment and so on.Through the analysis of the evaluation index system,we can know that Meizhou Bay port should make full use of its advantages, expand its economic hinterland, improve the hardware and software facilities, enhance its management level and build a wellknown brand to promote its comprehensive competitiveness in an all-round way.
