Abstract/Summary:
Since the outbreak of the financial crisis, the pace of global economic development has slowed down, trade protectionism has resurfaced, and international trade frictions have become increasingly fierce.United States and China are the two largest economies in the world, and there are very frequent political, economic, and commercial intercourses between them. However, there are cooperation in the trade between countries, and there must be competition. In recent years, iron and steel industry in China has developed rapidly and exports of steel products to the United States have continuously increased. At the same time, the domestic steel industry in the United States has been declining gradually and the original comparative advantage has been gradually losing. In order to support the development of the domestic industry, the United States continuously implement anti-dumping,countervailing and other trade protection measures for the iron and steel products which are exported to the United States from China. The increasingly frequent and diverse steel trade frictions between China the United States have a tremendous impact on iron and steel industry in China. As a country’s pillar industry, the healthy development of the steel industry is crucial to China’s economic development. Therefore, the in-depth study of the causes, effects and countermeasures of the iron and steel trade friction between the United States and China in this paper has profound theoretical and practical significance.First of all, through consulting and researching relevant domestic and foreign literature and historical data, this paper finds a new entry point for the study of trade effects of iron and steel trade frictions between the United States and China.Secondly, this paper analyzes the current situation of iron and steel products trade frictions between the United States and China, unearths the characteristics and development trends of every main type of trade friction, and analyzes the reasons for iron and steel trade frictions between the United States and China from the international level, the United States level, and the China level separately.Thirdly, this paper uses a combination of theoretical analysis, case analysisand empirical analysis to analyze and test the existence of trade restriction effects and trade diversion effects in the steel industry which are caused by steel trade frictions between China and the United States.Through a regression analysis of the steel product trade data between China and the United States from 1992 to 2016,it is found that trade restriction effects and trade diversion effects of trade friction between China and the United States are significant in the steel industry, that is,the increase of the number of steel trade friction cases between China and the United States will not only restrict the U.S.imports of steel products from China significantly, but also reduce the U.S.import share of steel products from China. In short, the iron and steel trade friction between China and the United States will have a significant negative impact on the development of steel trade in China. It is not a wise choice to launch a trade protection survey on imported goods at any time. The consequences of the trade frictions often do more harm than good.Better communication and win-win cooperation are the most correct modes of contact between the two countries. At the end of this paper, the author proposes countermeasures and suggestions for relieving the iron and steel trade friction between China and the United States in view of causes and effects from the international level, the bilateral level, and the Chinese domestic level.
