With the development of shipping industry, especially the rapid development of inland water transport,river-sea transshipment plays an important role in container transportation. The port group in the downstream of the Yangtze River which works as key node in river-sea transshipment network, has been showing a more important function. However, inland ports in the downstream of the Yangtze River are closely located, leading to fierce competition among different ports for goods within the same inland. To solve this problem, the government carried out a strategic plan by establishing port groups,in order to guide the orderly development of ports and port groups. This paper focuses on the study of the port competition and cooperation relationship between Jiangsu port group and Shanghai port group in the downstream of the Yangtze River. We mainly focus on the port cooperation within the port group and the port competition among the port groups. This paper studies on the game of competition and cooperation for river-sea transshipment port groups in the downstream of Yangtze River. Our study can provide theoretical support for the port competition and cooperation for port groups. The main research contents and innovation are as follows:(1)First,this paper summarizes the researches on port competition and cooperation in multi-port regions. We can find that the related researches mainly focus on the hinterland container market. This paper focuses on the influence of factors such as shipping cost, port charges, port infrastructure on the preference of selecting river-sea transshipment ports. Moreover,we mainly study the influence of container flows in different trade lanes on port competition and cooperation in multi-port regions.According to the literature review, there are a few relevant studies on port competition and cooperation in multi-port regions, however port competition and cooperation for port groups has not been investigated.(2)Based on the ports in the downstream of the Yangtze river, this paper analyzes the influence of containerflows in different trade lanes on selecting river-sea transshipment ports in the downstream of the Yangtze river.By considering the shipping cost, port charge and port infrastructure,a Logit model is established.Based on the Logit model,we propose two game theory models(a competition game, and a competition and cooperation game)to investigate port competition and cooperation for port groups. This paper studies port competition and cooperation between Jiangsu port group and Shanghai port group in the downstream of the Yangtze river on river-sea transshipment port charges.(3)In order to validate the parameters within Logit model,Biogeme is used to obtain the parameters. An algorithm on solving game theory models is used to solve our proposed game theory models for port groups,in order to obtain the port charges.Numerical results show that, the profit of ports will be underestimated without considering the cooperation between different ports within the same port group.
