Since the reform and opening up,China's economy has maintained a relatively high growth rate. However, many scholars have pointed out that China is still relying on the extensive economic growth mode driven by factors. The high energy consumption and high investment in economic activities often bring low output and low efficiency, which is a problem that cannot be ignored in the process of China's economic development.Total factor productivity is a good perspective for studying the mode of economic growth. Therefore, this paper takes 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions as the research objects, analyzes the current situation of China's economic growth mode from the perspective of total factor productivity, and uses panel data model to study the factors affecting total factor productivity. This paper uses the Malmquist-DEA method to calculate the total factor productivity of 31 provinces and cities in China from 1979 to 2016.The research results show that in the overall aspect of the country, the change of total factor productivity in China goes through three stages. From 1979 to 1996,total factor productivity fluctuated with an average annual growth rate of 4%.From 1997 to 2007,the growth rate decreased and the average annual growth rate was only 0.9%.From2008 to 2016,total factor productivity continued to decline, with an average annual decline of 1.7%.According to the sub-regional results, the overall quality of total factor productivity growth in the eastern region is significantly higher than that in the central and western regions, and Beijing and Shanghai are significantly higher than other regions, but the overall total factor productivity levels are lower in both the eastern and central-western regions. In the study of the contribution of total factor productivity to economic growth, except for the contribution rate of Beijing's total factor productivity to economic growth reached 61.56%,the contribution rate of total factor productivity in all other regions is not as good as that of factor input, and even some regions have negative contribution of total factor productivity to economic growth. Therefore, the main source of China's overall economic growth is still factor input. This paper then uses the panel data model to analyze the factors affecting total factor productivity using data from 1997-2016.The results show that foreign direct investment, exports, industrial structure, and economic growth rate have a certainpositive impact on total factor productivity;R&D investment, human capital, and government intervention are negative. In the process of sub-regional analysis,it is found that in different regions, the impact of each factor on total factor productivity is also different. On this basis, this paper proposes corresponding policy recommendations for the improvement of China's total factor productivity and the transformation of China's economic growth mode from the perspective of constructing independent innovation system and promoting strategic emerging industries.
