Stereum s.l.is a group of very important wood-decaying fungi that is very common in nature and causes white rot of wood. They were assigned into different families of Basidiomycota,Agaricomytotina,Agaricomycetes,Russulales, such as Stereaceae,Amylostereaceae,Echinodontiaceae et al..The taxonomy and phylogeny of this group of fungi is still unresolved. There are few studies on this genera in China, which need to be explored further.Combined with the traditional morphological methods and phylogeny analyses, more than 200 specimens was studied which are deposited at herbaria of Beijing Forestry University(BJFC),Center for Forest Mycology Research,U.S.Forest Service(CFMR)and National Museum of Natural Science,Taiwan(TNM).The morphological features of Amylostereum?Echinodontium?Laurilia?Perplexostereum?Stereum s.s.?Xylobolus were described and illustrated, the phylogeny analyses were carried out based on ITS by using different kinds of methods.Through this study,2 new generas,Echinodontiellum and Lauriliella, were discovered and proposed:A new species and a combination were published in the new generas:Lauriliella taiwanensis and Echinodontiellum japonicum. Moreover 4 new species,Stereum sp.nov.of Stereum s.s.,Xylobolus spl.nov.,Xylobolus sp2.nov.,Xylobolus sp3.nov.of Xylobolus. In addition,2 new Chinese records of Stereum peculiar,Perplexostereum endocrocinum were found. In this study,16 species which belong to Stereum s.l.,have been described and illustrated in detail.Identification keys to all the 8 generas is provided. In addition, the host, rot type and distributions of each species and the differences between them and similar species are discussed. The classification status of taxa was discussed based on the phylogeny analyses.A relatively nature classification system of this group is established in combination with morphology and phylogeny.
