Learning Progression is a new creation stemming from the development of international science education nearly ten years. Based on the perspective of Learning Progression, the paper set to research the cognitive path of junior and high school students in learning the concept of the light and its application using empirical research methods, then put forward reasonable suggestions on the curriculum teaching and evaluation of light and its application.In the first part of this paper, based on learning progression and the practical needs of physics curriculum's reform in our country, we put forward the research topic on the concept of light and its application. The second part of the paper gets the theoretical basis, content, research results of learning progression and the concept of the light and its application together.In the third part, the paper construct the hypothetical framework of "light and its application" . Firstly, through theoretical analysis, we established the three dimensions of the property of light, the transmission of light and the application of light, and used the ability of modeling and reasoning ability as advanced variable of light and its application. Secondly, by the similar of cognitive development path and the development history of optics leads to five important levels: perceived level;image analysis hierarchy; abstract research level; logic level; system integration level.On this basis and compared the Chinese junior and senior high school physics curriculum standards and the The Next Generation Science Standard to the topic of optical technology and its application, we constructed the advanced framework of light technology and its application.On this basis, we put the fourth part of empirical research. First of all, we worked on the evaluation tools and evaluation criteria fitting to the framework to explore the students' awareness of the concept of light and its application. In this study, some junior and high school students in Nanjing is taken as the research objects,and the final data are processed by Winsteps software. The results show that the evaluation tools and advanced framework have some shortcomings.
