An Analysis Of Influential Factors Of EPC General Contracting Design Approval

With general contracting pattern adopted extensively in international contracting market, EPC general contracting pattern, equipped with advantages of short construction cycle, low cost of construction and less disputes, is gaining a preference of an increasing number of Owners. The “go global” pace of Chinese EPC general contractors is speeding up, while the management level and profitability of Chinese EPC general contractors are far lower than that of international outstanding peers. In addition, affected by difference culture background and design philosophy, Chinese general contractors encounter a great many obstacles during design approval by Owners.This thesis is designed to analyze factors influencing the design approval of EPC general contracting project so as to facilitate general contractors getting the design approval successfully, reduce risks brought by the design approval to the general contractors, and enhance the project management level and profitability of the general contractors.Based on domestic and overseas theoretical researches on general contracting, relevant studies on design studies, personal experience and previous materials about EPC general contracting projects, this thesis identifies 19 influential factors in bidding phase, initialization phase and implementation phase. Soon afterwards, questionnaire inquiry is adopted to collect evaluation on effect degree of 19 influential factors from employees in relevant enterprises. With inquiry data, this thesis uses factor analysis method to narrow 19 variables(influential factors) down to Quality Factor, Communication Factor, Personnel Factor, System Factor, Schedule Factor and Owner Factor. Further, the thesis identifies the No. 1 influential Factor is the Quality Factor, and brings forward the most significant variable in each Factor. At last, this thesis proposes solutions for the General Contractors to mitigate the effect of each main Factor on the EPC general contracting design approval.Combining both theoretical and demonstrative methods, this thesis carries out qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis of the influential factors of EPC general contracting design approval, proposes solution to reduce the effect of each influential factor, which contribute to the project management improvement of Chinese EPC general contractors.
