The Eastern Western Monthly Magazine(hereinafter referred to as "Magazine")was the first newspapers and periodicals issued in Chinese Mainland by an overseas Protestantism missionary,which had broken new ground for modern Chinese journalism and communication and played a noticeable role in the history of Chinese presscommunication and Christianity in terms of its historical significance.Based on the content of the Magazine,this paper is aimed to figure out the meeting point between the communication and the rhetoric in theory,so as to find out how were these missionary intentions embodied in the sense of communication rhetoric and find a way to propagate the Christianity at last.The theory origins for this paper were Western rhetorical theories of Aristotle and Kenneth Burke for communication rhetoric because the communication rhetoric is an emerging associative theory,and the embodiment of communication rhetoric style and era characteristics of discourse construction in the Magazine have been the focuses in study.This paper is made up of five parts.Significance of the subject and research perspective are the main point of the first part,although related researches upon the Magazine and the communication rhetoric made by the academic circles have been introduced and research method,research strategy and academic significance have been illustrated in this part.By starting with the historical origin between the Christianity and China,the second part is working on unscrambling the historical environment in macroscopic level when establishing the Magazine,therefore historical background,motivat:ion and the founder Karl Friedrich August Gutzlaff have been analyzed so as to show the characters and features of the Magazine itself.The expression of communication rhetoric in the Magazine has been discussed in the third part,whose main content is rhetorical construction and figure of speech in the content and utterance of the Magazine with regard to the significance of communication.Moreover,a variety of articles on how to convey the missionary intention of the editor between the lines and how to choose methods in order to convince the Chinese audiences have been analyzed,besides the original text of the Magazine.Era characteristics of rhetoric speech of the Magazine have been analyzed in the fourth part.It had been born in a special historical environment and opened the discourse space for the Protestantism missionary in a totally alien and relatively closed country,which had made initiate sense.In other words,this part is aiming at finding out its utterance features under the conditions of that time.Concluding with the conclusive description on the basis of results obtained,the fifth part is finished.As we all know,the Magazine was born in cultural conflict between China and the Western world,and the study upon it in terms of theories of communication rhetoric is with the purpose of unfolding its hidden meaning for propagation from a new perspective,exploring its way on how to shock the traditional discourse system in China and observing and studying its gorgeous presentation and intrinsic nature form several aspects.In addition,its editor has been studied upon his way to propagate the Christianity in the Magazine by virtue of the figure of speech,in order to find out its step-by-step process in creating discourse space.On these grounds,it might be playing an enlightening role in the discourse space construction of media discourse and application of rhetoric methods in the future.
