| Eastern Western Monthly Magazine is a Chinese periodical about religion, astronomy, history, geography, science and technology commerce and so on. Its founder is missionary called Karl Friedrich August Gutzlaff from Germany. Because Karl was busy with official business, the periodical was passed on "Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in China" in 1835. After which, Elijah Coleman Bridgman and John Robert Morrison also wrote the articles for the magazine. Three missionaries tried to persuade the people in china to convert to Christianity and hoped the persons who didn’t believe in Christianity to set up their own values and world outlook, to accept the advanced knowledge from the west, to see the foreigners as friends, using the fusion method, the fear way, the ingenious way and the moving way. In addition, the persuaders wanted to knock at China’s door which was locked to service for western powers to colonial rule in China. Through the efforts of persuading people, the spread of publication dissemination has obtained certain effect. However, it was rejected by all ranks and classes in China.My paper has five parts. The first chapter introduces the background about this journal and discusses it from industrialization, Christian spreading widely and Qing Dynasty’s decline. The second chapter introduces the missionaries’ experience and faith.The third chapter researches the magazine’s recipient and the founder’s purpose, which includes the direct purpose and deep purpose. The fourth chapter induce the convincing way, and make an analysis of every part according to the the content of the journal. The last chapter is to discuss the effect after persuading. This chapter, from the perspective of the dialectics, praises the achievement of the Journal of transmission. On the other hand, it researches persuading effect of the journal, in combination with the attitude to Christianity as well as other foreign religions and the western from all levels of Chinese society. |
