With the advancement of China’s marketization process,China’s publishing industry has made remarkable achievements after several years of exploration and practice.The scale of publishing continuously expanded and the profit level gradually increased,behind these achievements,however,a hidden problem which is deeply worried by people exists in the publishing industry-long-term high inventory.With the increasing competition in the publishing industry,some important issues,such as how to improve the competitiveness of publishing enterprises,how to effectively control and save inventory costs,and so on,have been obtained more and more attention by the publishing companies.Z Company is a listed company in China’s publishing industry.With the full implementation of enterprise brand development strategy,the existing inventory management methods are no longer meet the needs of Z Company’s development.Therefore the inventory management has become an important issue to which Z Company has to face in its daily business activities.The implementation of scientific management of inventory not only can make Z Company to meet the needs of continuous production with the lowest inventory costs,but also can promote the efficient use of Z Company’s capital and improve Z Company’s market competitiveness.With the advent of digital publishing and e-commerce,publishing companies have begun to explore the using of paperless form for book publishing business.How to respond quickly to market demands and effectively reduce inventory costs are the major problems facing Z Company now.In this paper,we firstly comprehensively analyzed the relevant literature and basic knowledge of inventory management at home and abroad.We then took the inventory management of Z Company as the research object and carried out some relevant research about the inventory turnover and the relevant factors according to the current status of inventory management of Z Company through Z Company’s financial statements for nearly five years and the Wind database data.We summarized and classified the current main problems of Z Company by checking the relevant indicators,such as the inventory turnover for five years and the proportion of inventory to total assets,and by contrastive analyzing these indicators of other publishing enterprises.Combined with the inventory management theory,we obtained the root causes of these problems by deep analyzing these problems.On the basis of drawing lessons from the successful experiences of inventory management in foreign countries,by using the related theoretical knowledge of management and accounting,combined with the actual situation of Z company,we then optimized several key points that influence the inventory management of Z Company from the internal management and external operations.This paper also brings some enlightenment through case study: for Z company,the internal management,such as classify the inventory,establish an effective internal control system,strengthen the enterprise information construction and so on,can make use of the inventory information efficiently so that the management would keep abreast of the status of inventory and then to optimize internal processes.To control the inventory from the aspect of external operation,such as the establishment of joint inventory management model of publishing industry,the exploration of "zero" inventory,and so on,can form a partnership with key suppliers on the basis of making full use of resources.On the other hand,the construction of industry informatization platform is conducive to the sharing of inventory information between upstream and downstream enterprises in the supply chain.This paper has some reference for improving and managing the inventory management of Z Company,and it is expected to have reference value for inventory management of similar publishing enterprises.
