As a means of transport with several advantages such as large transport capacity, accommodating to various types of cargo and low comprehensive cost, container waterway transport plays an important role in the international trade. The rapid-growing demand for container throughput creates significant commercial benefits for the port as well as poses great challenges to the port's efficiency and safety oversight.Container yard is an important part of the port. Improving container yard's operating efficiency and management via the utilization of sensor technology is of great importance to the port construction.A small part of containers in the container yard are in motion while others keep stationary. Meanwhile, sensors deployed on containers are in the energy-limited state. The existing sensor technology does not make adaptable improvements in the aspects of networking method and routing protocol for the container yard environment, thus leading to problems such as poor quality of data transmission, high node energy consumption and poor network energy balance.This paper makes adaptable improvements in networking method and routing protocol of sensors in the container yard environment regarding to the problems above, and implements the functions of the sensor network. In the first place, this paper introduces a variety of classic routing protocols, summarizes the main factors affecting the effectiveness of routing protocols through the in-depth analysis and comparison of their strengths and weaknesses, and introduces the networking methods of LR-WPAN technology this paper studies on. Secondly, this paper proposes a networking method that differentiates the motion attribute of nodes according to the environmental characteristics of the container yard,designs a routing protocol called AODV-CY which can limit the influence caused by node mobility as well as balance node power, and optimizes the network address mechanism based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard data frame format according to the actual needs. Then, this paper verifies that AODV-CY protocol performs better than AODV protocol in several aspects such as network packet loss rate and node power consumption through NS2 network stimulation platform. At last, this paper introduces the development platform and the main programing interfaces used in the process of implementing the functions of the sensor network as well as designs and implements the main functions of the sensor network. The research results of this paper are of great significance to optimize the application of sensor technology in the container yard.
