How does media text bearing official ideology interact with young audience through their online media consumption in a virtual space of youth subculture? In order to answer this question, this study explores how users of website bilibili watch news videos regarding the South China Sea Arbitration and their discursive practice based on the Spectacle/Performance Paradigm, adopting semi-structured interview, content analysis and discourse analysis as research methods under the framework of virtual ethnography. This study suggests that identification of youth sub-culture is sutured with patriotism in the Spectacle/Narcissism circle through which red idols become symbolic resource for patriotism. In their discursive practice defending the sacred patriotism, bilibili users are disciplined by official ideology while exercising micro-power themselves:there is censorship based on certain discursive rules set through reproduction of official ideology. Thus, official ideology can be viewed as fluid in the network of micro-power,which is constantly being reproduced through identification and discursive practice.
