The Study On "Anxiety" Of The "Today Group"

This thesis aims to study unofficial-publicatione "Today",published in 1978,and the "anxiety",which is one of the main characteristics possessed by the members of"Today Group".Their "anxiety" does not simply mean "irrationality" or "mental disorder".It is another type of rationality to overcome all the limits and hardships in front of them with their strong,passionate beliefs in truth,and to face up to the background behind the reality."Today Group" had keen and sensitive insights into changes in the times,and strived to break the established forms with extraordinary ideas and pursue the originalities.The "anxiety" means not just the features of"Today group",but,at the same time,a source of drive to lead the social changes in the times of historical transition period.Through the research into "anxiety"of "Today group,"first,we can find the direct and indirect relationships among "Today group",the underground literature,known as a former form of "Today",the salons in 1970,and the "Baiyangdian poetry group".In addition,we can learn how "Today group",the successor of the "anxiety",could take their unrivaled position in the history of literature,overcoming the limit that they are "anxiety",(not related to administrations).Lastly,with the "anxiety" expressed in the works of "Today group",we can understand their complex,tangled,but abundant,colorful inner world,which has not been discovered in the previous researches.The first chapter studies the backgrounds of the "anxiety".We will search mainly into "the up-to-the-mountains-and-down-to-the-countryside movement",the salons,and the prohibited books.The experiences "from the up-to-the-mou ntains-and-down-to-the-countryside movement" provoked a shift in thinking of"Today group" along with the changes in their living space,and it played a key role in germinating the "anxiety" of "Today Group".The second chapter investigates the characteristics of "anxiety" of "Today Group".The main focus will be BeiDao,ShuTing,MangKe,ShiZhi,GuCheng,.JiangHe,Yanglian.Their Don Quixote-like enthusiasm and narcissistic delusi on create fantasy,combined with imagination,and they turn over the established order and the rationality overcoming all the obstacles in front of them in the ir own subjective,dream-world.In other words,fantasy is not irrational way of thinking but productive source of power which enables "Today Group" to be closer to the rationality.The third chapter focuses on the second feature of "anxiety " of "Today Group ".BeiDao,ShuTing,MangKe,ShiZhi,GuCheng are the main focus of this thesis.After suffering from the distress by the Cultural Revolution and the"up-to-the-mountains-and-down-to-the-countryside" movement,they agonized over the apprehension and tension,and fell into a slump.This provoked a way of thinking which was close to paranoia and oppressive-compulsive disorder,which became the distinctive individuality of "Today Group".
