Design quality is one decisive factor of the product quality. First and foremost, in an ever-changing market of consumer electronics and an ever-challenging market of printers, Hewlett Packard demands to improve the design quality of the printers by the tool of DFMEA. DFMEA is a method that analyzes and controls the products advance quality on the basis of the design experience on similar products to restrain risks and increase quality and competitiveness. The article forms the DFMEA table on a deep analysis of the prototype printer properties and possible quality issues by the introduction of the printer structures and previous failure analysis. However, it exists some weak points in the traditional RPN method. The article applies DT-OWA method combined with DFMEA to better reflect the information given by experts by figure prioritization and weighted aggregation to prioritize the applicable failure mode and adopt the improvement approaches till the RPN decreases below target and sees the method through in each phase from prototype to the market as a guidance of the quality improvement. In the end, with the assistance of DT-OWA, the results of DFMEA are evaluated by the comparison on the data feedback from the market on products new and old. The example indicates DFMEA and DT-OWA achieved zero design defect escape and an overall quality improvement on a descending SER rate. The research also offers support and reference to other printer design departments to establish a quality managerial method on the tool of DFMEA.
