As GB16999-2010 was issued in 2010, the technique of crown code recognition has been used to identify banknotes. According to the new policy of The People's Bank Of China in 2013, the query of the crown code in 100 RMB must be implemented by banking financial institutions gradually. Thus the research of currency code recognition technology has become pressing and necessary. The identification of banknotes is one application of digital image processing technique, and is a system which is opto-mechatronics. The identification system with the function of crown code recognition has a complex structure, and has a high demanding for real time performance as well. Thus, it is required that the system should be equipped with higher-speed CPU and process at higher speed.In this subject, a method in combination of CIS, FPGA and DSP is adopted, which realizes many functions to deal with various images of paper currency(including color image, grayscale image, infrared image, ultraviolet image and so on), such as the highspeed acquisition, skew correction, direction detection, par value recognition, identification, character recognition and crown code printing. This mode enables FPGA&DSP to display their respective advantages, which speeds up the acquisition process of image. This design also changes the platform of the recognition algorithm of crown code from by DSP to by FPGA, which means realizing the algorithm with the tool of hardware instead of software, so that the speed is improved further more. Thus, this design owns a better speed of recognition than the other finance recognition systems'. This paper includes most parts of the whole finance recognition systems, such as the selection of chips, the design of hardware platform, currency acquisition system, crown code recognition system and so on.In this paper, a lot of Modelsim simulations or on-line coupling by Signal Tap II are carried out about various function parts in FPGA, which brings us many simulation graphs and on-line coupling graphs. And this system design is proved to be right by the analysis of them.
