The automation of paper currency sorting is an inevitable trend of the bank work of paper currency sort. Currency sorter is an advanced financial implement integrated with optics,mechanics and electronics. Its main function is to recognize the denomination, face direction, new and old, deformity of the bills. Henceforth currency sorter may satisfy the general needs of selecting the bills adapted to the ATM and transmission, making the heavy work of currency sort simple, hygienic, quick and credible. With the development of the digital image processing technology and the birth of the advanced DSP, the method based on the DSP is extensively applicated in the currency sorter, making the currency sorter more and more small and high-speed.In this paper, the current status of the currency sorter development is summarized firstly. Then, according to the disadvantage existing in the current sorter, such as low operation ability, complex mechanical structure and huge volume, a currency image acquisition and processing system has been established based on the CIS and DSP.The constuction of hardware platform is the primary part, including the design of CIS drive, CIS output signal condition, A/DC, A/D output signal level converting, currency transmitting mechanism, minimum system of DSP, DSP periphery expansion, CPLD logic controller, JTAG debugging port, power management, USB communication and so on. The selection of important device and thier points for attention are deeply analized at the same time.Additionally, lots of efforts are done on the software design, for instance, the design of system initialization, A/D and USB program. Furthermore, the process of bootload program is researched and realized.The new technical innovations of this essay are: using the powerful operation ability and abundant resource of integrated peripherals of TMS320VC5509 DSP to execute varieties of tasks which are required by bill image processing algorithm. Applying so-called EMIF to expand external memory and ensure the volume data which is used to recognize the bill to be saved.The experimental result shows that the system has high value on project application with stability and real-time denmads. At the last of this paper, the future work and improve suggestions are writed.
