The national “Compulsory Education Subject Curriculum Standards(2011)” requires that English course should be set starting from the third grade and the English course objective should be divided into 9 levels.Level One refers to the basic requirements which should be met by the third and fourth grades,and Level Two refers to the basic requirements which should be met by the sixth grade at its end.The third and fourth grades should master around 450 most commonly-used words,about 50 idioms and set phrases,and be capable of written and spoken exchange activities;with regard to vocabulary in the Level Two requirements which should be met at the end of the sixth grade,students should learn about 600-700 words and around 100 idioms related to topic scope in this Grade.Both Level One and Level Two skill objectives require students to sing English songs or ballads.For instance,the Level Two skill objective requires students “to learn to sing about 30 English songs or ballads(Level One requirements included)”.In the traditional classrooms of English,teachers take vocabulary as part of the teaching content.Generally speaking,students learn all the new words of the text before learning a lesson.This method seems to increase the efficiency of learning new words and makes way for learning a new text.However,most students memorize the vocabularies through repeated reading and writing,reciting,dictation.Such mechanical training is likely to deprive students of their interest in English.They tend to doze off or get distracted in class,leading to a dull atmosphere.Their learning efficiency is thus largely reduced.Another method is learning new words whenever one encounters them in a text,and master their definitions and usages through context.This method calls for a competitive teacher.For instance,the teacher needs to have new concepts of English teaching and rich English cultural background.So far,many teachers still use the traditional method to teach English words.Based on the above background,the author makes an action research on English song teaching towards fifth grade students.With their beautiful melody and rich content,English songs are popular among students.In addition,English songs can show the charm of the English Language and stimulate students’ learning interest.They are excellent materials for students’ English learning improvement.The objective of this action research is to apply English songs to teaching so as to verify that:(1)whether English songs are beneficial to enhancing elementary school students’ English learning interest;(2)whether English songs can reach the expected teaching effect and improve English performance;(3)how English songs should be applied to elementary school classes;hoping to find a new method that is effective and suitable for elementary school students’ English learning.Through three months’ experiment and research,the effects obtained are quite significant.Firstly,English songs applied to teaching help to stimulate and cultivate students’ learning interest in English;secondly,English songs application in teaching can help to improve English classes’ teaching efficiency and enhance students’ English learning performance;thirdly,flexible class activity methods are adopted,such as: listening to English songs,lyric memorization contest,learning to sing English songs,English songs relay-singing,English songs performances.These activities can play a series of roles such as activating class atmosphere,increasing students’ learning interest,and giving full play to students’ potentials.This paper is divided into six parts to expound the application of English songs in elementary school English vocabulary teaching.The first part is the Introduction and mainly introduces the subject choice basis,definition of core concepts,research objective and significance,research content and key issues to be solved,research object,research process as well method of the paper.The second part is Theoretical basis.The third part is Literature Review,mainly introducing the research situation of English songs application in teaching as well as the relationship between English songs and elementary school English teaching.The fourth part of the paper is the action research process,including the action research preparation and the action plan implementation.The fifth part mainly summarizes the research data collection and analysis situation.The sixth part gives research results and discussion and mainly introduces the experiment findings,enlightenment of the experiment on teaching,limitations of this paper,suggestions on further research as well as the conclusion.This experiment research finds that,through English song teaching,students can practice and simulate,and also broaden their vocabulary and master usage of sentence types and patterns through learning a lot of lyrics.In an easy and cheerful atmosphere,their learning interest is stimulated and their own English level is improved.
