Vocabulary is one of the three elements of language. It plays animportant role in language learning. Therefore, vocabulary teaching isan important part of English teaching. Nowadays, along withShanghai’s Second Curriculum Reform, Oxford English (Shanghai Edition)is applied almost in all schools in Shanghai. Oxford English teachingbecomes many classroom researches’ theme, and Oxford Englishvocabulary teaching is one of the key issues. So to use English songs toteach Oxford English vocabulary in junior high schools in Shanghai,whether it is positive or not, becomes the purpose of the author’s writingof this thesis.This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter reviews manylinguists’ points of view and discusses the importance of vocabularyteaching. This chapter also presents the importance of vocabularyteaching, vocabulary definition and classification. This chapter brieflyintroduces the Oxford English teaching materials and puts forward theresearch topic, objective and its significance.The second chapter is a literature review, discussing respectivelythe following aspects.1) Vocabulary and its teaching research of Oxford English.2) Vocabulary and its teaching research of Oxford English ofShanghai edition.3) Vocabulary and its teaching research of Shanghai Junior HighSchool English version of Oxford English.The third chapter is about the practical research. It introduces theresearch contents, the research purposes and the means and measuresfor the research. And it also describes the process of the experimentalstudy by the author.The fourth chapter is the data collection and analysis. It analyses the data and interprets it. The fifth chapter is the conclusion. Based onthe survey and interview and the analysis of English songs used forOxford English vocabulary teaching, the study proves that it can workeffectively to some extent. It gives some problems as well as someeffective and practical solutions. The research results show that theapplication of English songs for Oxford English vocabulary teaching inJunior High Schools in Shanghai can effectively enhance the interest inlearning English vocabulary, inspire students’ learning enthusiasm,promote the students’ sense of language training, enlarge their listeningvocabulary, help to improve the students’ pronunciation, and thenimprove the quality of oral vocabulary. It can also deepen the students’memory of English words and improve the input of extra-curricularvocabulary. In a word, English songs applied in Oxford Englishvocabulary teaching in junior high schools in Shanghai assistedvocabulary teaching effectively.
