Teaching of English reading and writing in primary school higher-level graders is crucial.According to Krashen's Input Hypothesis,Affective Filter Hypothesis and Swan's Output Hypothesis,as well as the practical teaching experience of the author,we believe that reading and writing are two interdependent skills in learning English.We must find their meeting point and develop the mode of reading to writing with the help of a medium to the students' favor.Picture books just meet the requirements of this medium because of their well-written,well-illustrated and narrative styles.Picture Book-based Method of Teaching Reading and Writing(hereinafter referred to as PB-based R & W Teaching Method)becomes the focus of the study.The study first carried out a questionnaire survey on the higher-level graders of eight primary schools about the situation of PB-based R & W Teaching Method.In light of the statistics,the reading and writing teaching experiment was conducted in two classes of Grade Six in a primary school for a period of a semester.The control class followed the original reading and writing teaching method,while the experimental class was supposed to experience the PB-based R & W Teaching Method,in which reading skills and the guidance of writing would be focused and balanced with the help of topic-related picture materials.The study has reached the conclusions as follows: 1)The utilization of picture books in primary school higher-level teaching is not frequent.Reading and writing are separated in the traditional teaching process,which leads to students' low interest in reading and writing as well as absent-mindedness in class.Therefore teachers need to find an effective way to cultivate students' interest and ability in reading and writing.2)Exposed to PB-based Reading Teaching Method for a semester,the experimental class achieved significantly higher reading test scores than the control class.In the reading post-test,the experimental class scored 1.6097 points higher than the control class,while in the pre-test the experimental class only scored 0.0244 points higher.3)Exposed to PB-based R & W Teaching Method for a semester and promoted by reading,the experimental class also scored significantly higher writing test scores than the control class.In the writing post-test,the experimental class scored 1.3658 points higher than the control class,while in the pre-test,the experimental class even scored 0.2439 points lower than the control class.This experiment indicates that PB-based R & W Teaching Method can achieve good results in teaching reading and writing in the experimental class,in which reading can promote writing with the help of the picture books.The author hopes that more schools can carry out the joint study in the future so that the experimental results will be more objective.The author will spend more time to do further experiments,optimize and adjust the details,and finally form a perfect PB-based R & W Teaching Method.
