With the rapid development of digital technology, new media has already gradually penetrated into college students' lives and learning because of its digitization, interactivity,convenience and other characteristics. Compared with traditional media, its intension is more abundant, which brings great changes to the thoughts and behaviors of college students. The application of new media to the mainstream ideology education of college students provides new developmental opportunities for the innovation of mainstream ideology education and promotes the identification of Chinese mainstream ideology .The paper first clarifies the concepts of new media and mainstream ideology education and explains the role of new media in college mainstream ideology education. Then, with the use of empirical methods analyzes the situation of usage about new media. On one hand, the application of new media to mainstream ideological education of college students is conducive to expand the educational channels and makes material more lively and visual,which accords with the mental characteristics of college students; On the other hand, the application of new media to mainstream ideological education of college also brings some disadvantages, such as its limits, the lack of the ability to use new media, excessive reliance on new media, and the poor supervision mechanism. To conclude, in order to improve these problems, it is imperative to construct education theory system under New Media Environment, improve the ability of teachers of ideological and political theory course to use new media, the new media environment education system, enhance media literacy of college students and establish supervision and evaluation system.
