The "three elements" model has been favored by Chinese teacher when teaching Chinese in high school, showing that the "three elements" model has a certain practical value.However,teachers emphasis too much on the "three elements” and ignore the other features of the novel. As a result, the novel teaching could not reach the requirements of"the ordinary high school curriculum standard".Therefor, we need to research new ways of text reading on the basis of inheriting the traditional "three elements". So that we can give new life to traditional novel teaching mode. Iser's theory of "blank" provides a new direction for high school novel teaching .The "blank" let the students come closer to the author, have a deep understand of text and stimulate the enthusiasm of students to participate into creation. Besides, it produces endless thoughts and aesthetic enjoyment for students, so as to improve students' Chinese accomplishment.The research object of this paper is the novel unit in Chinese textbooks for high schools based on people. It is consist of three parts.The first part puts forward a new perspective of novel teaching, namely, "blank" theory. After the analysis of the the advantages and disadvantages of traditional "three elements" of the old teaching model o,we think it is necessary to take the "blank" theory as a kind of new text reading view and use it in Chinese teaching. Besides, the origin and development of the theory of blank are discussed. The second part discusses how the "blank" embodied in the novel text, starting from the novel "three elements", respectively, the character image, plot structure and environment describes . Then we summarize the existing form of the "blank" in the novel text .The third part's main content is the fill of the blank in high school novel teaching,including two aspects which are the principle and the way of blank fill. Through the research of this part, we try to solve the problem of how to use the blank in the novel teaching.Blank filling should follow certain principles, such as the principle of openness,interactivity, coherent, balance and so on.On the premise of following the principle of filler, we also put forward several specific filler ways, so as to provide reference for high school novel teaching.
