With the acceleration of globalization and the continuous development of science and technology, the petroleum chemical industry plays an important role in the national economy and development in our country.Meanwhile, the role of scientific and technical English in information communications and cultural exchanges becomes more and more prominent. The scientific and technical text belongs to information text, which is characterized by strong specialty, logicality and complexity. Therefore, when translating scientific and technical texts, the translation needs to be faithful to the source text and accurately express the source text to the greatest extent. The theory of translation shifts focuses on meaning equivalence rather than formal equivalence, which is consistent with the above requirements of scientific English translation. The third to fifth chapters of Petroleum Refinery Process Economics are taken as translation materials and the theory of Catford’s translation shifts is applied in the petrochemical text translation.Meanwhile, some problems of translation tasks from two aspects are analyzed in the translation practice, such as level shifts and category shifts, and a few corresponding solutions are proposed including translation shifts of tense and aspect, active and passive sentences as well as subject and object, and so on.In the increasing use of terminologies and lengthy, complex sentences in scientific and technical texts, the theory can flexibly make a necessary conversion into various language units, which virtually improves the accurate conveying of the source text information as well as the readability and accuracy of the target text. Therefore, there is great significance for Catford’s translation shifts theory to the scientific and technical texts. It is hoped that this translation practice report can provide references for some target readers who analyze and translate texts of a similar type and a new perspective for petroleum English to Chinese translation.
