| In recent years,Chinese enterprises are expanding their business overseas and inviting foreign experts or technicians to exchange the relevant engineering information, which increases the translation demand of engineering texts. The quality translation of such kind of documents would ensure a better understanding and smooth communication and cooperation between Chinese and foreign enterprises. The construction of circulating water pump in this report is also an engineering project conducted in Fujian Province in 2018 and many experts and technicians from China and foreign countries join hands together to participate.During the construction, many documents were translated including this Technical Specification for LOT24 A Circulating Water Pump which served to illustrate technical conditions, the scope of supply, civil construction, and installation guidance. This report takes it as a case study and aims at analyzing some effective techniques to improve the translation of this kind of engineering texts. In this translation report, the author mainly introduces the background information of this project and the client’s requirements and describes the translation process, including pre-translation preparations and post-translation proofreading. On this basis, the author focuses on analyzing the main difficulties encountered during the translation process, namely the translation of compound words and complex sentences and then offers the coping translation techniques. Finally, the author illustrates the feedback from clients,self-assessment to this translation task and suggestions for future work.By studying the features of compound words and complex sentences in Chinese and English, the author analyzes the difficulties from words and sentences level and their causes in the translation process. On this basis, since Functional Equivalence Theory advocates that the translation shall give priority to the responses of target readers and focus on the dynamic equivalence principle of meaning first and form second,it,as the theoretical guidance, helps the author to deal with the difficulties encountered and run a smooth translation. With the help of it,some techniques are also used in the C-E translation of technical text as follows: for compound words, literal translation can be used to make them easily understood;for the translation of complex sentences, the author classifies them as three types: complex sentences with single, double, three or more layers of structure in accordance with its features in this Technical Specification.Combined with the analysis of the relations between clauses, such translation techniques as conversion, combination and omission, division and restructuring can be adopted to make the sentences more idiomatic, readable and acceptable. At last, the author concludes some suggestions and hopes these translation techniques can be useful for those who are to translate engineering technical texts in future. |
