Translation Strategies For Absolute Construction In Scientific And Technical Texts From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory ——A Case Study Of Climate Change And Water Resources In Africa(Chapters One,two And Three)

The book which has been translated is entitled Climate Change and Water Resources in Africa,which was written against the backdrop of great climate change in Africa.Under the influence of a range of human factors,the status of water resources in Africa has been changing for decades,transpiring in changes in water flow and variability,falling groundwater levels,changes in rainfall levels and timing,as well as overall decreasing water quality.With this in mind,Climate Change and Water Resources in Africa,edited by Salif Diop,Peter Scheren and Awa Niang,has been dedicated to providing a deeper analysis of the effects of climate change on water resources in some of the most vulnerable areas in Africa,including the approaches that may help reduce or mitigate the impacts of climate change.It is also important that wealthier countries as well as major current GHG-emitting countries assume responsibility for their historic GHG emissions and support those countries that are most impacted by those emissions to adapt to such impacts,while reducing their own carbon footprints.As a whole,this book intends to contribute to the debate around climate change in relation to water resources management in the African continent,and in particular inform policy decisions and actions that will improve governments’ and communities’ ability to manage the challenges of climate change and variability in relation to the aquatic ecosystems upon which they depend.The translator selected the first three chapters as the source text for this translation practice.In the translation,he found that these three chapters contain many types of long sentences with absolute construction.He chose Functional Equivalence Theory as a guiding theory to translate the absolute constructions.He then proceeded to contemplating on his translation and analyzing how he translated absolute constructions under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory in this translation report,hoping to help his fellow MTI students improve translating absolute constructions.This translation practice report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter introduces the translation project,summarizes and analyzes the source text.The second chapter elaborates on the translation process,including three stages: pre-translation,while-translation,and posttranslation.The third chapter analyzes the theoretical basis of this report and expounds on the definition of complex sentences.The translator finds that in the chosen text,absolute constructions are structurally divided as absolute construction of “noun + non-finite verb”,absolute construction of “with + noun + present participle”,absolute construction of “with +noun + past participle”,absolute construction of “with + noun + infinitive”,and absolute construction of “with + noun + preposition phrase”.The fourth chapter is a case study.Under the Functional Equivalence Theory guidance,it analyzes such translation strategies as amplification,division,and structure adjustment for different types of absolute construction in the source text.The fifth chapter summarizes the findings and limitations of the translation practice report.
