A Report On The C-E Translation Of The Interpretative Text In Wang Yirong Memorial

This report mainly concerns the Chinese-English(hereafter short for “C-E”)translation of the interpretative text in Wang Yirong Memorial.Its significance owes,first of all,to the discovery of such problems as vacancy,insufficiency,inaccuracy in its translation,as well as the insufficiency in and lack of enough attention to the publicity of Wang Yirong Memorial,especially that from among foreign visitors.Therefore,under the guidance of relevant translation theories,this report tries to present such ideas as to how to come up with good translation of the interpretative text in Wang Yirong Memorial so that target readers can know Wang Yirong better and fully understand his patriotism in the late Qing Dynasty as well as his outstanding contributions in the field of oracle bone inscriptions.This report takes the interpretative text in Wang Yirong Memorial as the object of C-E translation practice,trying to present the difficulties encountered in the practice,its corresponding solutions as well as the application of translation methods and techniques under the guidance of Skopos Theory.It is mainly divided into four chapters.The first chapter briefly introduces the background of the translation project,its content,features and functions,as well as its framework.Chapter Two is the description of the translation process which mainly consists of three stages: pre-translation preparations,translation process and post-translation process.Chapter Three as the focus of the report is the case analysis.It firstly introduces the Skopos Theory as the guidance of the translation practice and applies its three rules,the skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule,to the C-E translation of the interpretative text in Wang Yirong Memorial.Secondly,under the guidance of the Skopos Theory,the practical translation methods and techniques are illustrated on three linguistic levels,namely,lexical level,syntactic level and textual level.For instance,as for many culturally-loaded words,proper nouns and terminologies,transliteration,literal translation plus annotation,free translation andamplification as translation methods and techniques on the lexical level,are found to be effective to make the target text clear.In terms of the complicated structure as well as the difficult meaning of Chinese sentences,reorganization,simplification and combination are employed in translation in order to make the target text more understandable,accurate and fluent.On the textual level,Zhang Zhenbang’s Three Connectors about text,including Logical Connectors,Grammatical Connectors and Lexical Connectors,are adopted in the target text.The fourth chapter makes a summary of the report and points out the limitations and suggestions for related studies based on this report.This report hopes to help improve the quality of C-E translation of the interpretative text in Wang Yirong Memorial,lead to more attention to the translation of this genre as well as its publicity,and promote the spreading of traditional culture of China to the world.
