A Report On Translating Hubei-Henan-Anhui Revolutionary Memorial Hall

Hubei-Henan-Anhui Revolutionary Memorial Hall is an important document written by Zhang Chunxiang, which mainly introduces the revolutionary history of the Dabie Mountains and is well worth academic study. It belongs to foreign publicity materials of red tourism. The translation materials are chosen from Chapter Seven Advancing 500 Kilometers Great Feat, which includes three parts:Unit 1. Liu-Deng Army Advancing Five Hundred Kilometers into the Dabie Mountains. Unit 2. The Dabie Mountains Liberated Areas. Unit 3. To Usher in the Birth of New China. It is the first time that this report has been translated. By translating the selected text, it aims to recommend and introduce the culture of the Dabie Mountains to the foreigners, including the historical background and strategic significance that Liu-Deng army advanced into the Dabie Mountains, disseminate its revolutionary spirit, make the most of its tourism value as resource of red tourism so that it can foster and develop new economic growth points in tourism, transfer the advantages of history, culture and resource to the economic preponderance, and promote coordinate development of economy and society in the old revolutionary base areas of the Dabie Mountains. As red tourism is developed throughout China now, I hope this report can provide reference for similar texts, and deepen my understangding and application of translation theory.This report will employ functionalist Skopos Theory as the theoretical guidance. Skopos theory was founded by German translation theorists, Reiss and Vermeer in the 1980’s. It has three basic principles:skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. "Skopos rule" means translation can function in culture of target context in the way receivers expect in target language and the process of translation is determined by the purpose of translation action, that is, the communicative purpose of target text, which is the basic rule. "Coherence rule" means translation must take into account receivers’ back-ground knowledge and real situation, and be coherent in semantic meaning to the greatest extent so that receivers in target language can understand the meaning of translation, and the translation conforms to expression of target language. "Fidelity rule " means there must be certain correspondence between source texts and target texts, but not identical in contents. The relationship among three rules is that fidelity rule is subject to coherence rule and both rules are subordinate to skopos rule.This report consists of five chapters:1. Introduction,2.
