With the global enthusiasm of learning Chinese as well as the deepening of academic circles to teaching Chinese characters to foreigners,the research field becomes more comprehensive and the results become more evident.Whether it is research focusing on ontology,learning Chinese,teaching Chinese or textbook writing,all these are committed to help students to better memorize and apply Chinese characters.The complexity of the Chinese characters,as different from alphabetic writing,is one of the main difficulties for students learning Chinese.Furthermore,some existing teaching methods for Chinese characters have certain shortcomings.Given the imbalance between the importance of the Chinese characters and them being mastered,it is necessary to employ the ideograms in Chinese characters for better memorization.The compendium "The graded Chinese Syllables,Characters and Words" is a Chinese ideogram classification,which is designed to provide a specific learning and teaching plan.This paper is divided into six parts.The first part introduces several aspects of the Chinese character research such as its origin,methods and current status.The second part is about the character table in "The graded Chinese Syllables,Characters and Words" in order to classify the ideograms from different perspectives.The third part analyzes the ideograms from "The graded Chinese Syllables,Characters and Words" and combines it with the foregoing ideogram classification.Relevant Suggestions are added to the table.The fourth part investigates how foreign students use and master the ideograms.Based on the above analysis of the ideograms,suggestions for teaching Chinese characters are given in the the fifth part.The sixth part summarizes and concludes the findings of this paper.Owing to the complexity of teaching Chinese characters to foreigners certain difficulties have been encountered especially regarding research statistics.However,I hope the findings about Chinese ideograms in this paper can contribute to improve methods for teaching Chinese Characters to foreigners.
