A Study Of Chinese-English Translation Strategies Of "Report On The Work Of Shandong Provincial Government(2015)" From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

Over 30 years since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy, China has made remarkable achievements, both politically and economically, and its comprehensive national power has been greatly enhanced. China has been an increasingly active player in the world. Many foreign countries expect to seek cooperation with China, and they are eager to understand the guidelines of the Chinese government policies. As an important political document, Government Work Report reflects focuses of government work for a certain period(including review of the previous year and tasks of the coming year), and its authoritativeness and comprehensiveness have always been drawing the attention throughout the world.Government Work Report has its unique characteristics in seriousness, authenticity and reliability as an official document. Since the report is commonly used in the government organs of different levels, the rendition is relatively inadequate. However, with the enhancement of China's political and economic influence in the world, Chinese government documents, such as policies and reports at all levels, need to be translated into different languages to meet the requirement of opening-up policy and promote the economic globalization and integration. Therefore, the rendition of Government Work Report has always been one of the major objects in many scholars' studies. Their researches provide different views on the translation work, especially the significant reference on the textual features of Shandong Provincial Government Work Report. With the increasing renditions of Government Work Report at all levels, translators should master more effective strategies to guarantee the quality, establishing the favorable image of China.As a large economic and cultural province in China, Shandong Provincial Government Work Report, which summarizes the provincial government work in the previous year, and elaborates working policies and plans in internal functions of the government, democratic construction, administration under the rule of law and other aspects, has always attracted extensive concerns. Compared to that of 2014, Shandong Provincial Government Work Report(2015) varies in many aspects, especially the sex ratio of birth population, which has been concerned for a long time by the public, is initially written in the report. The report(2015) also increases the expression intensity of culture, and puts “to excavate and make good use of the rich Qilu cultural resources” as a separate part(the seventh part of the report), showing the government's great attention on cultural construction, especially the construction of Qilu culture.As a theoretical model of translation studies from the perspective of rendition, Skopostheorie orients in the function of target text, pays attention to its practicability, and holds that translation is a purposeful and intercultural communicative activity among the humans, a productive activity of rendition under the interaction of multi elements. The three principles include the principle of Skopos(the most important principle), the principle of coherence and the principle of fidelity. In this thesis, a detailed analysis on the lexical and syntactic levels of source texts will be made under the guidance of Skopostheorie. The main content and principles of Skopostheorie will be explained to provide the theoretical guidance for the translation practice of the report. Under the careful study of stylistic features in languages of the report, the three principles of Skopostheorie will be used to guide its translation strategies. This thesis seeks to explain the guiding role of Skopostheorie in translation practice and provide the methods and strategies for the translation of the Government Work Report, so as to help people realize that a good translation can promote international exchanges, cooperation, as well as mutual understanding.
