On C-E Translation Of Report On The Work Of The Government(2012) From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

The annual Report on the Work of the Government (abbreviated as RWG) summarizes the work carried out and the accordingly achievements of previous year or the previous five-year by the Central Government. At the same time, it makes appropriate deployment for the further development, covering political system, economic development and all walks of life. Therefore, RWG has become the authoritative source for the outside world to learn about the latest situation and development of China. In this sense, the rendition of RWG bears the responsibility of enhancing China’s image and communicating with the outside countries.Report on the Work of the Government is a kind of political writing that is featured by formal words with Chinese characteristics so as to present political seriousness. A long sentence is constituted by several short clauses with no clear logical relationship. At the same time, multiple-modifiers are employed to demonstrate the accurate context. Parallelism and repetitive structures are adopted to enhance the aesthetic effect. All in all, RWG reflects the parataxis in Sino-Tibet language family, the translation of which belongs to a unique type as well. However, the study of RWG translation is far from satisfying. Excluding few famous translators with a few papers related with their specific translation practice, there is hardly any theoretical or systematical research about it.Under the guidance of Vermeer’s Skopostheorie, this thesis aims to implement a detailed analysis of the rendition of2012RWG, with the hope of concluding specific translation principles and translation methods.This thesis divides into six parts. To begin with, the author gives introduction to the research background, significance and purpose of the research, research questions and layout of the thesis.Chapter One reviews the contemporary researches on translation of RWG so as to explain why the present study is necessary and lay a solid foundation for the following research.Chapter Two is the theoretical framework. The author gives a detailed introduction to Skopostheorie, including the core word "Skopos" and the three rules, which are Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.Chapter Three is devoted to analyzing the rendition of2012RWG from the perspective of Skopostheorie. The author first introduces the basic elements of RWG and then continues to study the rendition of2012RWG based on the three rules mentioned in the previous chapter.Chapter Four concludes the principles for RWG translation based on the above analysis, which consist of priority of content over linguistic form, reader orientation, and being coherent with the source text. Under the guidance of Skopotheorie and those principles, the thesis summarizes specialized translation methods, such as interpretation, omission, substitution, addition, restructuring. Those methods are adopted to achieve the intended purpose.The last part is conclusion, which summarizes the major findings and importance of the thesis and also the limitation. In this part, the author draws three findings from current research on2012RWG. Firstly, Skopostheorie provides a new angle to translation study. Under the guidance of Skopostheorie, the main purpose of2012RWG translation is to achieve the intended international communication. Meanwhile, the rendition should try to comply with coherence rule and fidelity rule. Secondly, the intended purpose justifies the choice of suitable translation methods and provide theoretical basis for the effective but unrecognized translation methods, such as omission, restructuring and so on. Thirdly, translation principles are generalized from the analysis, which may be taken as references for the similar study.
